13 Fashion Stylists’ Best Tips & Tricks

Many of us have undoubtedly spent the majority of this year sweating – our outside clothes have accumulated dust in our closets, and our fashion sense has deteriorated in tandem with our social abilities.Even those of us who haven’t let our bodies forget how clothing feels may sometimes get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of choices available, much less by how to integrate new items into our wardrobes once they arrive.

Dressing does not have to be a hassle. We contacted Kristen Saladino, Chief Fashion Director of Good Housekeeping, and a few other professional stylists for their top fashion ideas to help us get out of a wardrobe rut.

    1. Convert to monochrome

By wearing a single shade from head to toe, you may avoid the strain of matching colors. It’s elegant for spring and may inspire you to revisit old favorites in a new light. Saladino is particularly fond of gray, pink, and white. If you have a lot of denim in your closet, consider the time-honored “Canadian tuxedo.” A denim jacket paired with a jean skirt can help elevate your basics to a fashionable level.

    2. Incorporate these three critical components.

If you despise complex fashion trends or just want to put together an outfit, Heidi Nazarudin of The Ambitionista says you only need three things. A set of classic sunglasses that compliment your face, a beautiful everyday leather purse, and a pair of stylish, easy-to-walk shoes can immediately elevate any ensemble.

    3. Experiment with vibrant lipstick or accessories.

We recognize that black and neutrals are easy to work with and infinitely versatile. However, if you’re interested in experimenting with loud patterns or vivid colors, Nazarudin suggests wearing them as an accessory first before investing in a piece of clothing. “Instead of a bright citron shirt, go for a cuff, bracelet, or even lipstick,” she advises.

    4. Consider wearing a vintage cardigan.

By layering a granny cardigan over graphic shirts at the back of your wardrobe, you can breathe new life into them. Wear one from a thrift store that appears to know its way around a cedar chest with cropped jeans and loafers for an on-trend look that won’t break the bank.

    5. Remove your gym sneakers

Running sneakers are no longer limited to the treadmill. Saladino recommends teaming eye-catching sneakers with a dress or skirt for a fashionable look that’s also comfortable enough for jogging around town. We like a look that lasts.

    6. Put on the belt.

Belts are a necessary component of your wardrobe arsenal. According to Yraola, adding a textured, beaded, or colorful belt is the quickest way to bring together even the most basic items or instantly enhance a casual ensemble.

    7. When buying online, use a tape measure.

Knowing your dimensions, especially when shopping online, may help you avoid unpleasant size mistakes. “I’m a huge admirer of internet shopping,” Nazarudin explains. “However, I’ve discovered that sizes vary significantly across companies and even cuts, so be careful to remember your shoulder, breast, waist, hip, and inseam measurements.”

    8. Experiment with track pants or trousers.

After a year of lazing in sweatpants, yoga pants, and other loose garments, the prospect of donning structured trousers may seem confining. Saladino recommends wearing a pair of trousers instead.Dressing up in track trousers with a beautiful jacket, a shirt, and a pair of statement shoes may help transition you from the workplace to a night out.

    9. Bear in mind the rule of two.

If you’re concerned about pairing patterns, follow Yraola’s advice. “Two is the maximum number of patterns or colors that may be mismatched, such as stripes and flowers or lavenders and grays,” she explains. “Do not include a third.”

    10. Add a few pearls.

Saladino recommends wearing a pearl necklace or pearl hair clips with anything from t-shirts to business attire to add a touch of shine to your ensemble. Layer a string with other jewelry for a vintage-inspired granny chic style, or to infuse otherwise casual clothing with surprising beauty.

    11. Proudly flaunt your loafers.

Loafers are a popular shoe style right now, and with cause. Saladino observes that the office staple has escaped to wear dresses and skirts, flirt with feminine lace socks, or walk on the wild side with patterned socks.Combine loafers with almost everything in your wardrobe to freshen up your old standbys.

    12. In a single word: Blazer

Saladino adds that a well-chosen blazer can enhance almost any ensemble. Your choice of style reflects your personality. To add shine, choose crushed velvet, leather, brocade, or a fitted classic version.

    13. Coordinate your mask

Masks are here to stay, so incorporate one into your look.Choose adorable patterns or fabrics and coordinate the color family with your clothing to tie everything together. Simply ensure that yours meets the current COVID-19 face mask safety requirements.
